The International eIFU platform(s) pledge environmental and fiscal superiority, but… Paper is extremely recyclable, and the U.S. has more trees today on its property than it had in its entire history. Also, litigation in the medical device industry is mimicking other historically-profitable manufacturing environments like auto, food, and model glue, as it is being viewed as a platform for profit, with a quest for correction of personal injury seemingly second. Traditional paper IFUs establish a chain of information that can be easily observed in the courtroom. Opening the packaged insert “assumes” the piece of instructional paper was touched. Even an inexpensive generic instructional sheet to suggest engaging company-generated “eIFU” platforms, as on the Internet, is better than nothing. With that action, the chain of information would seem hard to discredit in litigation. A final note on cost-savings: Traditional IFUs (paper inserts), even if an IFU becomes a “small book” of 8 to 80 pages in length, using “pharm” paper and “no-tox” ink, simply does not enforce a burdensome cost-driving mechanism on to the price of ANY medical device. The “Economies” of any paper IFU manufacturing can drive per unit cost to less than a dime. Paper is NOT an issue from any position, environmentally or otherwise.
